Hi all,

How would I bring a DWG of a detail into a DataCAD Drawing?

Thanks for the help,

CADwk :?

I would first import the .dwg drawing into a blank Datacad.aec drawing, save it.
Then you could either xref this drawing into your main drawing, this way no random acad elements that might corrupt your drawing would get in the drawing, or
you could import the layers from the datacad file into you main drawing.

The other advice (that Mark Toce with DC LLC imparted to me) is to never, NEVER, **EVER** import an Acad DWG into an AEC file that you're working on. Import it into a new drawing, then you can either xref it in (as Roger suggested) or then select what you need and cut-n-paste it into the AEC file you are working on.

Be aware that when you import the drawing, it will probably default to mm. On the initial screen where there is a query about fonts, linetypes, etc., there is also a value requested. That box is for feet, inches, meters. You are safe importing it in using inches or feet.
If you check something that you know the size of and it is way too small, then you will probably need to enlarge by 12. If it is too large, then enlarge by .0833333.
You may find lots of random lines and points that are just part of the translation difficulties. That is really apparent if the original drawing comes from a surveyor.
Since you mentioned a detail, that may not really apply. What you will probably see is a detail that is all white lines and blocks. You will find that you will get lots of editing practice when you deal with importing. It isn't really difficult, but there is usually a lot of clean up needed before you see what you want to see.
Good luck,
Woody

What Woody said!! And along the lines of the factor of 12 - whenever you're importing something from a Civil Engineer it will almost ** ALWAYS ** need to be scaled up by a factor of 12.
